How long does it take to learn German? – A marathon, not a sprint –

Every day I hear the same question from my new students:
How long does it take to learn German?

Learning German is like running a marathon. The hard truths are that you must invest the time, the work and the effort. There is no other way. If you think that you could just pick up the language effortlessly or learn it in three weeks, you will be disappointed. Whether you’re new to learning German or you have some experience from some time ago, learning German will take commitment, time investment and regular practice. However, like running a marathon, it can be tremendously rewarding, and an achievement to be proud of, that brings lots of quality into your life.

German language is stuffed full of grammar when you first begin. As much as you might resist, the language will probably turn you into a grammar geek. The concepts are not complicated, however using them at the speed of speech – is challenging. It requires practice: repeating phrases to yourself, singing in the shower, inventing miniature stories on the way to work. You’ll start to internalize the rules, and suddenly semi-automated sentences will pop out of your mouth.
